The Branches of Thai Medicine
Traditional Thai medicine in Thailand is historically split into Three disciplines:
Religious or Spiritual Healing
Manipulative Massage
Dietary Regimens and Herbal Medicines
Energy Therapy: Thai Massage
Interestingly, Thai massage is not considered to be bodywork. Thai massage is seen in Thailand primarily as a therapy of energy. Therapists do not soothe muscles with stroking Swedish-like movements, but rather apply acupressure to certain points on the body in order to increase the flow of energy through the "sen" as necessary to relieve symptoms and stimulate healing. Linked by these energy lines, the part of the body massaged may be entirely different from the part of the body of concern.
For example, a massage to treat insomnia will concentrate on the legs; a massage to treat cough may focus on the arms and legs.
These techniques can be understood by looking at where the "sen" run within the body and which systems they affect. And while Thai massage has gained increasing popularity in the West, in Thailand the Thai massage remains intimately tied to the other three branches of traditional medicine.
Traditional Thai Massage conditions the energetic balance between body and mind; a typical Thai massage session will provide a balance of Palm Presses, Acupressure, Joint Mobilization and Thai Stretches. This therapy is provided to the client being fully clothed and resting on a covered mat (80"x60"x2").
